Pune, 9th November 2022: The Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has been seizing movable assets, including vehicles, television sets, and refrigerators, from those with pending property tax dues for several years. This move, termed “excessive” and “operation vasooli” by many, comes after multiple other moves for the Corporation, including notices and confiscation, that have not been completely successful.

While civic officials justified the move by claiming that only those with tax debts owed for five years or more would have their movable assets confiscated, activists dubbed the action “Hitlershahi” (dictatorship) and “Pathani Vasooli” (coercive measures). It has also been claimed that the latest move was made without prior notice.

“Every citizen has to pay taxes on time,” said activist Manav Kamble. However, he further claimed many citizens have not received any notification of tax obligations in the last two years. Suddenly, the civic administration begins seizing defaulters’ personal belongings. Furthermore, civic officials do not take action against prominent taxpayers under political duress.
