Pune: PCMC Urges Housing Societies To Test Borewell And Well Water Amid GBS Concerns

Pune, 30th January 2025: Amid concerns over the possible spread of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) through contaminated water, the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has urged housing societies to test borewell and well water before consumption. The Water Supply Department has also advised residents to boil and filter drinking water as a precautionary measure.
Fifteen suspected cases of GBS have been reported in areas including Pimpri, Wakad, Bhosari, Pimple Gurav, Chikhali, and Talwade. In response, drinking water samples from these localities have been sent to the Public Health Laboratory in Pune for analysis.
PCMC has announced that chlorine levels in drinking water from wells, borewells, and tankers will be closely monitored. Additionally, all housing societies have been advised to clean their water tanks twice a year and ensure that water from borewells and wells is tested before use.
Societies must also verify the source of water tankers before consumption and ensure that tanker water is not mixed with municipal drinking water. Residents have been cautioned to check the quality of 20-liter water jars before use.
“In the current situation, residents should take extra precautions by boiling and filtering their drinking water,” said Pramod Ombhase, Chief Engineer of the Water Supply Department.
