Pune, 17th June 2021: As per Maharashtra state government order, Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has released relaxations in lockdown.

However, in the last 15 days people travelling in cars are at the mercy of Pune city police as the police personnel on the road are collecting fines as per their own understanding of the rules. People have alleged that the cops threaten to file cases if anybody argues about the rules.

The PMC and state government order states that maximum three persons (driver+2) can travel. However, Pune city police has tweeted that people can travel in car as per the seating capacity allowed by the RTO.

When contacted, Deputy Commissioner of Police (traffic branch) Rahul Shrirame said, “We are fining people for not wearing mask and seating capacity violation. As per the PMC and state government order only 50% capacity is allowed in four wheeler.”

We spoke to many police personnel on the ground who also said that they have been told to impose fine on people violating the 50% seating capacity. Few cops pointed out that they have exhaust the current receipt book (issued by PMC) as they will not get them in future. Same receipt is used to fine for violation of COVID norms also.

Punekar News reached out to people who said that they have been fined for following the rules!!

PMC is expected to issue revised lockdown rules either on Friday or Saturday as per last seven days COVID positivity rate. We hope Pune city police follows the PMC rule and make its stand clear as to how many people can travel in a car.
