Pune: People Oppose Tunnel Road Proposed From Vetal Tekdi Area
Pune, February 22, 2021: A tunnel road was proposed by Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) from the Vetal Tekdi area to avoid traffic congestion on Senapati Bapat Road. However, it is receiving massive opposition from the citizens as it may hurt biodiversity in this area.
A citizen movement was organized to oppose this proposal, and the PMC has now opted for the forest department’s nod for the proposed road.
The PMC had proposed this route in their development plan since the year 1987-2007. Balbharti road and HCMTR route have also been proposed in the project. In 2015, PMC called for objections and suggestions from the citizens.
The proposal received huge opposition from people, and Sushma Date, a member of Deccan Samiti Parisar, collected 2000 signatures against the proposed road. A movement called ‘Save Vetal Tekdi’ was also run by the people.
The NGT has asked for NOC from the forest department for further construction. Therefore, the PMC has opted for the forest department’s nod for the proposed road, and the proposal has been sent to the forest department headquarter in Nagpur.
