Pune, 21st August 2022: On the occasion of the Amrit Mahotsava years of Independence, although the central government has made the booster dose of Corona vaccine available free of cost to all, only 7% of the citizens in the age group of 18 to 59 years of the state have taken it. Epidemiologists are appealing that although the nature of the Corona epidemic has become mild, it is not over, so do not hesitate to take the booster dose.

42 % of health sector workers across the state took booster doses, while 39% of frontline workers took booster doses after free boosters were made available. 27% of citizens above the age of 60 took the free booster dose. However, only 7% of the 18 to 59-year-old age group take boosters. State Immunization Officer Dr Sachin Desai has given information about this.

The response to preventive vaccination during the Corona period has reduced the severity of the epidemic. After the third wave of Corona due to the effect of Omicron virus subsided, the citizens also ignored the booster dose of Corona vaccine. Recently, Omicron’s BA.4, BA.5 and BA.2.75 types have seen some increase in the number of corona patients.

After that, a decision was taken by the central government to give free booster doses of the corona vaccine to all citizens above 18 years of age on the occasion of the anniversary of independence. However, it is clear from the statistics of the state that even after providing the booster dose for free, the citizens of the age group of 18 to 59 years are not very keen to take it.

In Delhi, the rate of corona infection has gone up to 20% Omicron’s BA.2.75 is clearly increasing. Genetic sequencing of affected patients has shown that the incidence of this type of infection is significant in Maharashtra as well. So it is not advisable to turn your back on vaccination. The government has decided to make the booster dose available free of charge.
