Pune, 13th January 2023: On Friday, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), an animal rights organisation, staged a protest against the use of glass-coated kite strings (Manja). The protest was organised near the Westside store on Ferguson Road.

PETA Activists dressed up as birds injured by kite strings and warned that such strings could injure not just birds but also humans.

The protest comes a day before Makar Sankranti, a festival many people celebrate by flying kites often made with sharp nylon or cotton strings that are coated with glass. These strings are known to get caught in electric wires and cause short circuits or trap birds causing injuries. Humans are equally at risk from stray kite strings. Within the city itself, there have been many cases where people have lost their lives due to injuries caused by these strings. In December last year, a man in Daund had his throat lacerated by a Manja while he was riding his bike and soon died.

“We are requesting people to not use sharp, glass-coated Manja, and if you want to fly kites do it responsibly by using cotton Manjas,” said Radhika Suryavanshi, an activist from PETA India.
