Pune, 12th January 2023: As the festival of Makar Sankranti draws closer, people have already started flying kites as per local tradition. However, many of these kites have razor-sharp kite strings, known as ‘Manja’, which act as a hazard to humans and animals.

In one such incident, a pigeon got tangled up in a bundle of kite string and suffered serious injuries before it was rescued.

Shirish Mahajan (51), a businessman residing in the Kasba Peth area, was taking out the trash in the morning when he was alerted to a flailing pigeon on a neighbouring roof. He went onto the roof, pulled the string towards himself with a stick, and cut it with his teeth. He took the pigeon and freed it from the string with a pair of scissors. Following this, he treated its wounds and gave it some water, after which it flew away. Mahajan preferred to rescue the pigeon himself, rather than call the fire brigade. According to him, the fire brigade may have had more important tasks, and he could have helped the pigeon himself.

Referring to the tradition of flying kites on Makar Sankranti, he said, “You should celebrate festivals if you want, but you should not put the lives of humans or animals in danger.”

Within the city itself, the deadly kite string known as Manja has caused the deaths of several people in the past. The government has since banned its sale, and the police have cracked down on vendors.
