Pune: Pimpri Chinchwad Aims For 30% EV Usage Targeted by 2026
Pimpri, 26th July 2023: Pimpri Chinchwad, a city known for its progressive approach, is now geared up for a greener and more sustainable future. With the collaboration of the Electric Vehicle Cell of Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation and RMI (Rocky Mountain Institute), the ‘Pimpri Chinchwad City Electric Vehicle Readiness’ plan has been formulated.
This ambitious initiative aims to boost the adoption of electric vehicles in the city by an impressive 30% by 2026. Commissioner Shekhar Singh confirmed that the city is well-prepared to effectively embrace electric vehicles.
During a recent meeting at the standing committee hall of Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation, in association with RMI India, measures were discussed to accelerate the usage of electric vehicles. Dignitaries, including PMPML Managing Director Suchendra Pratap Singh, RMI India Managing Director Akshita Ghate, and other officials from various organizations, attended the event. The ‘Pimpri Chinchwad City Electric Vehicle Readiness Plan’ was unveiled by the EV Cell of Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation on this occasion.
The plan, developed with technical assistance from RMI, outlines nine actionable measures to expedite the transition to electric vehicles in Pimpri Chinchwad. These measures encompass EV charging and battery swapping infrastructure, electrification of public transport, and the promotion of EV component manufacturing. Stakeholders from more than 100 organizations contributed their inputs during the City EV Accelerator workshop held earlier this year in February. The plan sets ambitious targets and initiatives that both public and private sectors
will undertake to boost EV adoption.

Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) has already set an inspiring precedent by electrifying over 20% of its fleet, with more than 450 electric buses currently operational. Another 150 buses are slated to join the fleet by the end of the year, making Pimpri Chinchwad the first city in Maharashtra to achieve the strategic target of 25% electrification in public transport. The safety of charging stations remains a top priority as the electric fleet grows.
Speaking about the EV Cell’s role in shaping a low-emission urban mobility system, Akshima Ghate, Managing Director of RMI India, expressed their commitment to support Pimpri Chinchwad’s EV transition. Presently, EVs account for over 10% of new vehicle registrations in the city. The Municipal Corporation aims to lead in EV adoption by developing a comprehensive and regularly monitored EV Readiness Plan that aligns with the Maharashtra EV Policy and establishing a city-level governance structure for EVs.
Achieving the goal of EVs contributing 30% of new vehicle registrations by 2026 could result in a remarkable reduction of 0.8 million tonnes of carbon emissions over the lifetime of the deployed vehicles within the city. Such rapid adoption of EVs will accelerate urban mobility decarbonization and promote sustainable living.
Noteworthy Facts:
Around 1.5 lakh new vehicles are registered in Pimpri Chinchwad city annually. Before 2021, EVs accounted for only 1% of new vehicle registrations in the city.
In 2021, EV penetration increased to 4% of the total 1.08 lakh vehicle registrations. The municipality offers incentives of a 2% discount to property owners and 5% to housing societies for setting up EV charging stations. PCMC is committed to establishing at least 100 public/semi-publiccharging/swapping points by 2023, with the number set to increase to
at least 500 by 2025.
