Pimpri Chinchwad, 23rd March 2024: As urban areas like Pimpri Chinchwad witness rapid expansion, the occurrence of fire incidents, both in residential and industrial sectors, has become a recurrent concern. However, due to the inadequate number of fire stations and personnel, authorities face significant challenges in effectively managing these emergencies. The fire department has devised plans to bolster its workforce by recruiting 150 firemen through direct service to address this pressing issue.

With a population of approximately 30 lakhs, Pimpri Chinchwad hosts a multitude of densely populated neighbourhoods and slums, alongside the emergence of towering structures and a burgeoning industrial landscape, including IT companies. Given the city’s demographics, it ideally requires 18 fire stations for adequate coverage. However, it currently operates with only eight centres, placing immense strain on the existing manpower. The fire department comprises a handful of officers and administrative staff, along with six leading firemen and 30 firefighters, further exacerbating the strain. Plans entail establishing ten centres, including a central hub in Pimpri, necessitating additional personnel to meet the escalating demand.

To bolster the fire department ranks, PCMC has devised a recruitment strategy, envisioning the hiring of 191 individuals across various roles. This includes 150 firemen, 10 assistant officers, 6 station officers, 15 mechanics, and 10 leading firemen. The recruitment drive commences with the hiring of 150 firemen in the initial phase, targeting vacant positions in the ‘D’ cadre within PCMC’s permanent establishment.

Manoj Lonkar, Deputy Commissioner of the Fire Department at PCMC, has announced the publication of recruitment advertisements, with detailed information available on the PCMC website. Eligible candidates are invited to submit applications online, marking the first step towards augmenting the fire department’s workforce and enhancing emergency response capabilities.
