Pune Plans 10 New Double-Decker Flyovers to Tackle Traffic Woes

Pune, 2nd May 2025: Encouraged by the success of Pune’s first double-decker flyovers on Karve Road and Ganeshkhind Road, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has proposed 10 more such structures across the city to ease growing traffic congestion.
The PMC will work in partnership with Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (Maha-Metro) and the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) to plan and execute the upcoming projects, which will incorporate both metro lines and road traffic lanes in a stacked format.
“These integrated flyovers have proven to be a practical solution in high-density areas. We are now looking to replicate the model across other traffic-prone junctions,” said a senior PMC official familiar with the plan.
The double-decker flyover at Nal Stop on Karve Road, built jointly by PMC and Maha-Metro, has already become operational and has been positively received by commuters. A similar structure on Ganeshkhind Road, connecting Hinjawadi to Shivajinagar as part of the metro network, is nearing completion.
Officials say the concept allows optimal use of vertical space, especially in areas where road widening is not feasible due to existing infrastructure or limited land availability.
Proposed Locations for New Double-Decker Flyovers:
Mundhwa – Mahatma Phule Chowk
Solapur Road – Kalubai Chowk
Dandekar Pul Chowk
Awhalwadi Chowk, Wagholi
Warje – Ambedkar Chowk
Bhusari Colony – Kothrud Bus Depot
Golibar Maidan Chowk
Viman Nagar Chowk
Fatimanagar Chowk, Wanowrie
Ravidarshan Junction, Manjari
Each flyover will be designed in consultation with the metro agency to align metro rail lines on the upper tier, while motor traffic will be handled on the lower tier.
If cleared, the initiative could significantly improve commute times and support the city’s fast-growing population and vehicle count.
