Pune, 23rd April 2026: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has approved a proposal to offer a 50 percent property tax rebate for residential properties up to 500 sq ft registered exclusively in the name of women within its jurisdiction.

The proposal, prepared by the civic administration, was placed before the standing committee and has received its approval. Standing Committee Chairman Shrinath Bhimale said the proposal will now be forwarded to the general body for final approval and subsequently sent to the state government.

According to PMC records, around 70,773 such properties fall under this category, generating an annual revenue of approximately ₹40.48 crore in property tax. With the implementation of the proposed rebate, the civic body is likely to face a revenue shortfall of nearly ₹20 crore, officials said. The administration had sought and received clearance from the Chief Legal Officer before moving ahead with the proposal.

The scheme has been framed under provisions of Sections 140-A and 140-B of the Maharashtra Municipal Corporations Act, which allow tax concessions. However, the benefit will be subject to certain conditions.

Only those properties that are registered in the name of women as of March 31, 2025, will be eligible for the rebate. The concession will be limited to the current demand for the financial year 2026–27. No relief will be provided on pending dues prior to April 1, 2026, including interest, penalties, or fines.

Penalties applicable to unauthorized properties will continue under Section 267(A), and existing rules will remain in force. Additionally, properties currently availing a 40 percent concession will instead receive a reduced benefit of 25 percent under the new proposal.

The administration stated that the initiative aims to encourage property ownership in the name of women and promote their financial empowerment.
