Pune, 30th May 2025: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has approved a ₹66.08 crore project to process non-biodegradable waste such as discarded mattresses, sofas, clothing, and leather. The project, with a processing capacity of 75 tonnes per day, will be set up at the Ramtekdi waste management facility. The approval was granted during the Standing Committee meeting held on Thursday (29th May).

Under the new initiative, PMC will appoint a contractor for a 15-year period to build and operate the plant. The contract has been awarded to Green Pruthvi Solution LLP, a Pune-based company. According to the proposal, the firm will receive ₹13.03 crore to establish the facility and a total of ₹66.08 crore over the next 15 years for operations and waste transportation.

The contractor will be paid ₹690 per tonne for transporting hard-to-process waste such as mattresses, rags, furniture, leather materials, and abandoned roadside vehicles to the facility.

Initially, the Solid Waste Management Department had proposed to set up the facility in Sus, Baner. However, due to anticipated public opposition, the administration identified a plot of PMC-owned land in Ramtekdi for the project.

Controversy surrounded the approval process, as the proposal was hurriedly cleared after Wednesday’s (28th May) Standing Committee meeting was adjourned. The proposal, which reached the Municipal Commissioner’s office on Wednesday, was swiftly approved and forwarded to the General Secretary’s Department later that evening at 8:20 pm.

Due to internet issues in the General Secretary’s Department, the proposal was registered late, prompting municipal staff to work late into the night to complete the formalities. On Thursday, the proposal was officially approved during the Standing Committee meeting.

Municipal Secretary Yogita Bhosale clarified that although the proposal appeared to be fast-tracked, it had been submitted during Wednesday’s committee meeting as per due process.
