Pune: PMC Awards Rs 87 Lakh in Sports Scholarships to 344 Budding Athletes

Pune, 30th May 2025: In a significant boost to local sporting talent, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) awarded sports scholarships worth ₹87.20 lakh to 344 emerging athletes on Thursday. The scholarships aim to support players in purchasing equipment and preparing for competitive events.
The awards were distributed at a ceremony held at Balgandharva Rangmandir. The event was attended by Additional Commissioner Omprakash Divate, Deputy Commissioner of the Education Department Asha Raut, Deputy Commissioner of the Property and Establishment Department Pratibha Patil, Deputy Commissioner of the Sports Department Kishori Shinde, Chief Labour Officer Nitin Kenjale, and Primary Education Department Sports Officer Manik Deokar, among others.
The scholarships are part of 18 schemes implemented under PMC’s revised sports policy to promote grassroots sports development. A total of 743 applications were received, of which 344 were found eligible and awarded the scholarship. Notably, 37 students from municipal schools were among the recipients.
Cheques were handed over to the selected athletes, and international player Siddharth Kamble along with national-level player Suchita Kharwandikar shared their experiences during the event. The program was moderated by Suresh Pardeshi.
“These scholarships will enable young athletes to invest in better training and gear, empowering them to compete at higher levels,” said a PMC official at the event.
