Pune, 23rd August 2021: As per the Environment status report (ESR), the green cover is increasing in Pune. Considering the need for more trees in the city, the Pune municipal corporation (PMC) is planning to increase green cover at hills. For this, a fund of Rs 26.25 crores will be made available, said Hemant Rasane, chairman of the Standing Committee.
According to ESR, currently, there are 43.13 lakh trees in the city. The ratio is 1.39 trees per person. In 2016-2017 the number of trees was 38.60 lakh and the ratio was 1.23 trees per person. In the last five years due to efforts made by the PMC, the tree cover in the city has increased by 22.5 per cent. Overall 429 different tree species were found in a count made by the PMC.
There are 11.13 lakh trees in the Katraj- Dhankawadi ward area which is the highest in the city, while Bhavani Peth recorded the lowest number of trees which is 12,000. Besides this 1826 acre forest land in Parvati, Bhamburda, Warje, and Dhanori are under PMC jurisdiction.
The PMC conserves the trees on hill areas with the help of joint forest management teams. Along with this, the PMC also prepared a list of barren lands in its jurisdictions that will be developed as urban forests or green parks. In the first phase, 50 acre land in Mohammadwadi and 45 acre land in Warje will be developed as mini forest, said Rasane.
