Pune: PMC Imposes Rs 1,000 Fine for Feeding Pigeons in Public Areas

Narayan Peth, 6th December 2024: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has started imposing a fine of ₹1,000 on citizens caught feeding pigeons in public areas. The action comes in response to the growing concern over the exponential increase in the pigeon population, which is linked to the spread of diseases.
On Thursday, PMC officials conducted an operation in Ward No. 15, Narayan Peth, near Mavale Hospital, where they caught a resident feeding pigeons. The individual was warned against repeating the act, and sacks of grain being used for feeding were confiscated. A fine of ₹1,000 was also imposed on the offender, identified as Amol Suryavanshi from Kasba Peth.
Deputy Commissioner of the Solid Waste Department, Sandeep Kadam, stated that similar actions are being carried out across other parts of the city to curb the practice.
The operation in Narayan Peth was led by Senior Health Inspector Mahendra Sawant, along with Health Inspector Syed, and team members Bhau Kadam, Sudam Sawant, and Dattatray Badambe.
The PMC has reiterated that feeding pigeons in public places contributes to hygiene issues and public health risks. Residents are urged to cooperate with the authorities to ensure cleaner and safer urban spaces.
