Pune: PMC Launches Drainage System Cleaning Ahead of Monsoon Season
Pune, 15th June 2023: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is engaged in pre-monsoon preparations to maintain an effective drainage system in the city. These works include comprehensive activities such as drain cleaning, widening and deepening of drains, cleaning of rainwater lines and chambers, and other necessary repairs.
Under the diligent efforts of PMC, all 95 critical spots in the drainage network have been successfully cleaned. Additionally, a commendable 100% cleaning of 382 culverts out of 382 has been accomplished. Furthermore, out of the total length of drains requiring attention, a substantial 165 km of drains have been meticulously cleaned, desilted, and appropriately deepened in certain areas.
To prevent waterlogging on Pune roads during the upcoming monsoon season, proactive measures have been taken. A total of 48,000 chambers have been removed from existing structures, and a thorough cleaning of 184 km of monsoon lines has been completed. Moreover, new rainwater chambers are being constructed alongside footpaths and connected to the drainage system to ensure efficient water flow. All critical areas, culverts, drains, and stormwater chambers and pipes have been thoroughly cleaned and maintained as per the necessary requirements.
This comprehensive cleaning operation will continue throughout the monsoon season. In preparation for any emergencies, a dedicated disaster management room has been established at the PMC building. Additionally, junior and branch engineers have been assigned to address complaints received during the night and ensure prompt resolutions under the disaster management framework. Disaster management cells have been set up at each ward office, and emergency workers have been assigned night duties to ensure round-the-clock response and support.
