Pune: PMC Launches Massive Citywide Cleaning Campaign, Collects 80 Tons of Garbage in Two Days
Pune, 10th December 2024: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has initiated a comprehensive cleaning drive to address the growing problem of unclean streets, garbage piles, and neglected public spaces. Starting from the Dhole Patil Ward Office on Monday, the campaign has seen remarkable efforts from various departments. Over the course of two days, a total of 80 tons of garbage and road debris have been collected, marking a significant step toward restoring the city’s cleanliness.
On the first day, 40 tons of waste—including road debris, wet and dry garbage, and garden waste—were removed. The second day yielded similar results, with 20 tons of road debris and 20 tons of garbage being cleared. Additionally, PMC workers cut 14,600 meters of cable, repaired 130 square meters of roads, and fixed 45 square meters of pavements.
Key Highlights of the Campaign:
Massive Garbage Collection: Over two days, 80 tons of waste, including road debris, wet waste, and dry garbage, have been cleared from various areas.
Infrastructure Repairs: Damaged streetlights were repaired at 48 locations, 19 drainage chambers were cleaned, and several roads and pavements were restored.
Tree Maintenance: Pruning was carried out for 130 dangerous trees across major roadways, ensuring safer and clearer pathways for citizens.
Encroachment Removal: Handcarts, stalls, defective vehicles, and unauthorized boards and posters were removed from public spaces to improve accessibility and aesthetics.
The campaign involved significant manpower, with 543 employees from the Solid Waste Department, 15 from the Civil and Electrical Departments, 62 from the Encroachment Department, 18 from the Sky Signs Department, contributing to the initiative.
Target Areas and Activities:
In Ward 20, 6 tons of road debris, 5 tons of wet waste, 2 tons of dry waste, and 2.5 tons of garden waste were cleared. Additionally, 60 square meters of roads and 25 square meters of pavements were repaired.
In Ward 21, 10 tons of road debris, 7 tons of wet waste, 5 tons of dry waste, and 2.5 tons of garden waste were collected. Roads spanning 70 square meters were repaired, and significant encroachments were removed.
Tree Pruning Efforts:
60 trees along Thapte Chowk to BT Kawade Road Bridge.
30 trees near Roshni Petrol Pump to Kalyaninagar Bridge.
50 trees between Maldhakka Chowk and AD Camp Chowk.
Sandeep Kadam, head of the Solid Waste Department, highlighted the collective effort across multiple departments to execute this campaign successfully. “This initiative is a significant step toward ensuring a cleaner and safer city for all residents,” he said.
The PMC plans to continue its cleaning drive in other ward offices to ensure the entire city benefits from this renewed focus on hygiene and infrastructure maintenance.
