Pune, 13th March 2026: The civic administration has directed all departments to complete road excavation works across the city by April 30, as the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) plans to begin pre-monsoon road repairs from May 1.

According to officials from the Road Department, the water supply, electricity and drainage departments have been asked to finish all necessary digging work within the next one-and-a-half months. After April 30, permission for road excavation will be granted only for emergency works. The instructions were issued during a recent review meeting.

Roads in the city are frequently dug up for laying or repairing drainage lines, water supply pipelines and stormwater drains. Excavation is also carried out by the police administration, Maharashtra Natural Gas Limited (MNGL), Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) and private telecom companies. The civic body grants permission for such works after charging the required fees, while the responsibility of repairing the roads lies with the PMC’s Road Department.

As part of the annual pre-monsoon preparations, the Road Department undertakes repair work from May 1 until the onset of the monsoon. Therefore, all departments have been instructed to complete their excavation works within the stipulated timeframe.

The PMC has also warned that no department or agency will be allowed to carry out excavation work for laying service lines between May 1 and September 30. If any digging work is found during this period without permission, strict action will be taken against the concerned agency.
Meanwhile, last year too, the civic body had set a similar deadline of April 30 for excavation works and planned to begin road repairs from May 1. However, the administration later extended the deadline until May 15, citing urgent works.

Pre-monsoon showers began in the city on May 8 last year, forcing the civic body to carry out road repairs during the rainy season. Despite last year’s experience, the administration has again fixed a similar deadline this year. If the monsoon arrives early, there is a possibility that some damaged roads may remain unrepaired.
