Pune: PMC Prepares List Of Areas That Could Be Affected When Water Discharge From Dams Increases

Pune, 25th July 2021: In the rainy season, water discharge from the Khadakwasla dam has raised concern among citizens as many areas in the city gets affected. Against this backdrop, the Pune municipal corporation (PMC) has prepared a list of areas in the city which could be affected if the discharge from the dams increases.

Meanwhile, it is also observed that if more than 28,000 cusecs of water is released into the Mutha river, there is a risk of water infiltration into human settlements in different parts of the city.

According to the Disaster Management Department, the Baba Bhide bridge in Deccan goes underwater after releasing 18,000 cusecs of water from the dam and affecting traffic every year. After discharging 28,000 cusecs of water from the dam into the river basin, water started infiltrating into the Khilare settlement near Garware College. Along with these, many other areas could be affected once the water discharge is increased by more than 28,000 cusecs.

List of areas and water discharge levels that could be harmful:

• 18,000 cusecs – Bhide bridge

• 28,000 cusecs – Khilare Vasti

•30,000 cusecs – Kamgar Putla area

• 35,000 cusecs – Pulachi Wadi

• 40,000 cusecs – Tofkhana locality near Shivajinagar court and area behind Deccan PMPML Bus Stand

• 45,000 cusecs – Backside of Poona Hospital, Narayan Peth, Amruteshwar Mandir Shaniwar Peth, Nene Ghat Sheikh Salla Dargah, Municipal Colony Kasba Peth, Mangalwar Peth, Tadiwala Road

• 50,000 cusecs – Riverside in Shivne, Hingne, Karvenagar Road near Alankar Police Station

• 54,000 cusecs – Jayantrao Tilak Bridge goes underwater

• 55,000 cusecs – Kondhve Dhavade, Bhimnagar stream area, New Kopare area, Uttamnagar Indiranagar colony, Nanded river area, Wadgaon Budruk survey number 14 and 15, Hingane Khurd survey number 18, Ambil Odha, Dattawadi and Rajendranagar

• 60,000 cusecs – Patil Estate Slum

“If the rivers cross the dangerous water level, immediate relief work is carried out in the necessary areas”, said Madhav Jagtap, Deputy Commissioner, PMC.
