Pune: Serious Negligence Towards Water Hyacinth Removal In Pune City

Pune, 25th July 2021: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) issued a tender for the removal and transportation of water hyacinth from the river in Pune. But in reality the water hyacinth is only being cut off and thrown into the riverbed in various areas.
The work is not done according to the tender, and there is serious negligence towards the removal and transportation of the hyacinth.
The PMC allocate the tender of Rs one crore for the removal of water hyacinth from the rivers and Rs 50 lakh for Katraj and Pashan lake for the period of April 2021 to March 2022. The tender includes work like removal of the hyacinth and then transport it to other areas. The Machine used for this work is Spider A-91 and R-65 and the rent is Rs 3, 374 per hour. For the transportation of removed water hyacinth, each ferry costs Rs 513 and each worker working for this is been given Rs 713 per day. With this rate the overall yearly cost is Rs 90.40 lakh which will be paid by PMC.
However, while the tender includes all these things, in actuality the transportation is not been done by the contractors and water hyacinth is only dumped at the riverside which later merged into the river and create more problems.
Speaking about this additional municipal commissioner Kunal Khemnar said, “It’s impossible to remove the water hyacinth. This will add on transportation costs, therefore, the water hyacinth is being removed and thrown elsewhere”.
Regarding the issue, Mukund Kirdhat, city president of Aam Admi Party said,” The problem of water hyacinth will not be solved by only removing it. We have to work for it along with environmentalists and researchers.”
