Pune: PMC Removes Over 250 Unscientific Speed Breakers, Plans New Installations

Pune, 7th January 2025: In an effort to improve road safety, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has removed more than 250 speed breakers out of the 600 that were found to be non-compliant with the Indian Road Congress (IRC) norms. The action, carried out over the last two weeks, follows concerns over unscientific road design and traffic hazards.
Sahebrao Dandge, an official from the PMC road department, explained the ongoing initiative: “We have undertaken this drive in coordination with the ward offices, and the removed speed breakers will soon be replaced with new ones that meet the required standards.”
According to IRC guidelines, speed humps should not exceed 10 cm in height to avoid vehicle damage, and urban areas should have a recommended speed limit of 30 km/h. A recent survey by PMC found that several speed bumps did not conform to these standards, leading to safety concerns.
PMC officials confirmed that there are approximately 3,500 speed humps on over 2,000 km of roads under their jurisdiction. In 2016, the corporation formed a committee to review and standardize the construction of these speed breakers. Following complaints, a comprehensive survey was conducted last month to identify problematic humps that were creating road hazards.
