Pune, 9th October 2026: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has initiated steps to take action against sanitation workers who have remained absent from duty for prolonged periods, directing officials to submit proposals for dismissing employees who have been continuously absent for more than five years.

The directions were issued during a review meeting on solid waste management and public sanitation across the civic body’s 15 ward offices. Officials were also asked to intensify punitive action against those violating rules, including norms governing plastic use.

The meeting reviewed a three-month pilot of performance-based road sweeping launched across all 15 ward offices. Under the initiative, a 700-metre stretch has been allocated for sweeping, with the number of workers determined according to the assigned area.

However, officials found that the designated stretches also included internal private roads within large housing societies. The civic body has directed officials to reassess these stretches, reduce the assigned areas wherever necessary and submit revised details to the headquarters within five days.

Officials were also asked to improve sanitation planning in Pune Cantonment Board areas, where complaints about public cleanliness have been received repeatedly.

The meeting was held under the directions of the additional municipal commissioner (Estate) and attended by the deputy commissioner of the solid waste management department, deputy commissioners from all five administrative zones, assistant commissioners of the 15 ward offices and senior health inspectors.
