Pune: PMC Seeks Rs 300 Crore to Build Flood Protection Wall for Ekta Nagari

Pune, 3rd June 2025: To prevent recurring monsoon flooding in Ekta Nagari on Narveer Tanaji Malusare Road (Sinhgad Road), the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has proposed building a protective wall at an estimated cost of ₹300 crore. The proposal has been submitted to the state government’s Disaster Management Department for approval and funding.
Last year, heavy rainfall led to increased discharge from the Khadakwasla dam, inundating low-lying areas along Sinhgad Road, including Ekta Nagari, which lies within the blue flood line zone. The deluge damaged homes and property, prompting the then Chief Minister to visit the affected area and announce plans for rehabilitation.
Although a preliminary report was prepared as per the CM’s directives, earlier rehabilitation plans encountered technical hurdles. In light of this, PMC has proposed the construction of a flood protection wall along the river as a more feasible and long-term solution.
“Building a protective wall along the river is the most viable option to mitigate flood risks in Ekta Nagari. We’ve submitted a ₹300 crore proposal to the state’s Disaster Management Department,” said Prithviraj B.P., Additional Municipal Commissioner.
Similar protective walls have previously been constructed in flood-prone areas such as Kamgar Putala, Mangalwar Peth slum, Patil Estate slum, and Shantinagar slum in Vishrantwadi, yielding positive results.
Officer to Monitor Dam Discharge in Real Time
The PMC has also taken additional steps to ensure early warnings and better coordination with the Water Resources Department. Last year’s sudden release of water into the Mutha River without prior municipal notification worsened the situation.
To prevent such incidents, the PMC will now station a dedicated municipal officer in the control room of the Water Resources Department. This move is expected to facilitate real-time updates on dam water releases, enabling quicker responses.
“Having a municipal officer in the dam control room will help us act proactively and reduce the risk to citizens,” added Additional Commissioner Prithviraj B.P.
