Pune, 19th December 2023: In a bid to recover outstanding property tax dues, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is set to auction 50 commercial properties out of the 200 seized for non-payment. The Taxation and Tax Collection Department has initiated the assessment process for these properties, with completion expected by the end of next week, paving the way for the auction in the upcoming new year.

Property tax constitutes a significant portion of municipal revenue, and the department has been assigned a target of generating Rs two thousand crores in property tax during the current financial year. To achieve this goal, the PMC has implemented various measures, giving priority to dues recovery. The Taxation and Tax Collection Department is actively issuing notices, imposing fines, and sealing properties of tax defaulters who have accumulated crores of rupees in arrears.

As part of the crackdown, the department has sealed 14,000 properties, with an additional 30,000 commercial property tax cases pending. The sealed properties will now be put up for auction to bolster revenue streams. A total of 200 properties have been confiscated, and the first phase will witness the auction of 50 commercial properties.

The assessment of the confiscated properties has been set in motion by the administration, involving the appointment of a government assessment officer. The property assessment process is scheduled for completion by the end of December, paving the way for the auction of commercial assets in the new year. To facilitate the auction process, the Taxation and Tax Collection Department will receive additional manpower, and lawyers will be hired on a contractual basis to address outstanding judicial cases.
