Pune, 23rd February 2023: Over 400 pathological labs in Pune have been slapped with notices by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) for not responding to the civic body’s request to share details of their paramedical staff. The PMC had issued letters to all private hospitals and pathology labs in the city directing them to submit the details. However, not a single lab responded.

Illegal pathology labs have mushroomed in the city, and the PMC is now taking action against them. The Maharashtra Association of Practicing Pathologist and Microbiologist (MAPPM) have written to the PMC showing their willingness to help the civic body to identify and take action against illegal path labs. The action against people running illegal labs can be taken on the lines of bogus doctors, claim the association.

The PMC had issued letters to over 450 labs in the city requesting them to share details of paramedical staff working, and make sure the pathologist working at the lab is qualified and registered with the paramedical council as per the norms of the Maharashtra Paramedical Council Act 2011. The civic body has warned that in cases of any pathologist found not registered with the council during the visit, action will be taken against the lab. However, not a single lab has shared data.

According to Dr Manisha Naik, assistant health chief, PMC, the PMC had issued letters to the pathology labs and asked them to submit the details of pathologists. After their non-cooperation, notices have been issued to over 400 path labs in the city.

The rise of illegal pathology labs in the city poses a significant risk to public health. With names and signatures of pathologists printed on reports, patients are under the wrong impression that the pathologist has supervised the lab tests and reports.

The PMC has yet to decide on the action it will take against the non-cooperative labs.
