Pune, 1st September 2023: Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has cracked down on individuals caught spitting while consuming tobacco and related products at Undri Chowk, a bustling square in the city. This decisive action follows concerns raised by local residents regarding the unhygienic conditions arising from the prevalent habit of chewing tobacco and betel nuts, only to casually spit them out in public spaces.

Undri Chowk, renowned for its perpetual activity, had been grappling with the unsightly issue of public spitting, prompting residents to file numerous complaints with the PMC’s health department. Swiftly addressing these grievances, the Kondhwa-Yeolewadi Area Office, under the guidance of General Assistant Commissioner Dr. Jyoti Dhotre, collaborated with Senior Health Inspector Mangaldas Mane and Health Inspector Raju Dullam to take action against four individuals caught in the act of consuming tobacco at Undri Chowk.

Each of the offenders received a Rs. 1,000 fine and, perhaps more importantly, an education on the consequences of their actions. The event witnessed the presence of several prominent figures, including former sarpanch Subhash Takle, Rajendra Bhintade, Health Inspector Umesh Thombare, Sachin Bibve, Abhijit Suryavanshi, Amar Shere, PMC employee Rakesh Dakle, and Vijay Mhaske, along with Mukadam Dayanand Patole. These community leaders addressed the gathering, articulating their concerns about the persistent filth at Undri Chowk, primarily attributed to the consumption and subsequent spitting of tobacco, rendering the square unsanitary.
