Pune, 22nd May 2024: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) previously ignored the unauthorized construction of rooftop hotels, pubs, and restaurants across the city. However, following the recent incident in Kalyaninagar, the PMC has been compelled to take action.

On Wednesday, the PMC intensified its crackdown, demolishing 54,300 square feet of unauthorized structures at 54 locations, including three major pubs.

The Kalyani Nagar incident has sparked nationwide outrage, prompting the police and state excise department to scrutinize the sale of liquor in pubs violating regulations. Unauthorized constructions, including rooftop hotels and pubs, have proliferated in areas like Kalyani Nagar, Koregaon Park, Mundhwa, and Kharadi, compromising customer safety, especially at night.

Despite prior notices issued by the Municipal Corporation, many establishments have continued operating illegally. The corporation’s attempts to close these establishments have often been in vain, as they frequently reopen.

Following the Kalyani Nagar incident, the Municipal Corporation has targeted unauthorized hotels in areas including Mundhwa, Koregaon Park, Pune Station, Viman Nagar, and Ghorpadi. On Tuesday, actions were taken against two rooftop hotels in Kharadi. By Wednesday evening, operations were conducted at 54 locations, resulting in the demolition of unauthorized structures at three major hotels—Unwind, Superclub Bar Kitchen, and Orilla in Koregaon Park area—and 44 smaller hotels and seven rooftop establishments. In total, 54,300 square feet of illegal construction were removed.

The demolition operation involved 10 engineers, 21 policemen, 45 Maharashtra Security Force (MSF) personnel, 40 laborers, seven JCBs, three breakers, and three gas cutters.

“The PMC has identified 89 unauthorized hotels. Additional unauthorized hotels have been identified through a recent survey. We have initiated action against these establishments from Wednesday. Although notices were issued earlier, these hotels often resume operations post-action. Repeated enforcement is being undertaken,” said Prashant Waghmare, City Engineer, Pune Municipal Corporation.
