Pune 22nd Sept 2023: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has taken a decision to auction the properties of residents who have failed to pay their outstanding property taxes. The decision was taken after numerous reminders to these residents went unanswered. According to officials, the property tax of these defaulters have been pending for several years and the properties were seized by the municipal corporation following non-payment of the tax.

A staggering number of over 400 properties fall under this category, all of which have been previously served with notices by the PMC, urging them to settle their overdue tax payments. Despite repeated notifications, the property owners have remained non-compliant, said officials. The outstanding property tax dues in Pune have reached an alarming figure, with records indicating an excess of Rs 8,000 crores pending from various property owners. Notably, this substantial sum encompasses a range of defaulters, including industries, commercial complexes, IT parks, hospitals, and even mobile tower owners.

During the financial year 2022-23, a substantial amount of Rs 148.52 crore was outstanding from 2,512 properties. Moving into the current fiscal year, a disconcerting 1,591 property owners have collectively neglected to pay approximately Rs 95.18 crore in property tax dues, said officials.
