Pune, 13th May 2025: In a move to enhance public convenience, especially for those working outside their homes, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has decided to build air-conditioned (AC) public toilets at key locations across the city. These facilities, primarily aimed at women, will be located near the city’s entrance points and close to Pune Railway Station.

The new toilets will be equipped with Wi-Fi, mobile, and laptop charging stations, offering citizens a modern and comfortable space. Users will be able to access these facilities by paying a fixed fee, ensuring cleanliness and proper maintenance.

Every day, thousands of citizens leave their homes for work or business , and while the PMC has provided several public toilets in various parts of the city, many remain underused due to inadequate cleanliness.

Last month, Deputy Chief Minister and Guardian Minister Ajit Pawar, in a meeting, emphasized the need for providing modern and well-maintained toilets for passengers coming to Pune. He directed that high-end, VIP-style toilets should be set up at the city’s entrances and near Pune Station.

In response, PMC has taken a decision to establish seven state-of-the-art, air-conditioned toilets across the city. These VIP toilets will be equipped with various facilities such as Wi-Fi and mobile/laptop charging stations. The estimated cost for setting up each of these facilities is around ₹50 lakh.

The PMC has opened up proposals for interested parties to manage and maintain these facilities. The “pay-and-use” model ensures proper cleanliness and maintenance of the toilets. Additionally, the facilities will offer showers, changing rooms, and restrooms, with provisions for charging devices and Wi-Fi. Ramps will also be provided to accommodate differently-abled individuals.

To ensure regular upkeep, enough sanitation staff will be assigned to maintain the cleanliness and operational efficiency of these facilities. Sandip Kadam, Deputy Commissioner of the Solid Waste Management Department informed that PMC has also considered allowing private organizations to take over the construction and maintenance of these toilets. In such cases, the costs could be offset by advertising rights granted to these organizations.

Proposed Locations for the New Toilets:

1. Chandani Chowk – Baner
2. Katraj Chowk – Shewalewadi
3. Wagholi – Pune Airport
4. Near Pune Railway Station
