Pune, 21st March 2025: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has issued a stern warning to housing societies and independent residential buildings that are ignoring notices regarding excessive water usage. Under the Equal Water Supply Scheme, PMC had installed water meters across the city to monitor consumption. Despite being served notices to reduce their water usage, several societies have failed to comply. As a result, the civic body is now considering cutting off their water supply.

As part of the Equal Water Supply Scheme, 141 water supply zones have been created in the city, out of which 47 zones are operational. In 41 of these zones, water meters have been installed to measure the volume of water released from the main tanks into society reservoirs.

According to the guidelines, societies are allotted 135 liters of water per person per day. However, PMC inspections have revealed that some societies are consuming 500 to 600 liters per person, far exceeding the limit. Investigations also uncovered leakages in society tanks, faulty systems that fail to stop the water supply once the tanks are full, and negligence in shutting off the water after the tanks are filled.

In response, the municipal administration issued notices instructing societies to reduce their water consumption and fix leakages. However, the persistent disregard for these notices has prompted discussions within the PMC about cutting off the water supply of the defaulters.

Once the zoning process is fully implemented, PMC plans to conduct a thorough leakage detection drive. With meters installed on main pipelines, secondary pipelines, and society tanks, the civic body will monitor whether the recorded water output matches the volume released from the main tanks. Pipelines with identified leaks will be replaced as part of the ongoing water management initiative.
