Pune, 14th July 2023: The implementation of a separate water scheme for Uruli Devachi and Fursungi villages by the Maharashtra Jeevan Pradhikaran (MJP) is underway. However, plans to form a municipal council for the two villages have raised concerns regarding the financial responsibility of maintaining and repairing the water scheme.

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has communicated to the Urban Development Department that the burden should not be placed on them. A decision is expected from the Urban Development Department, as the issue of cost allocation remains unresolved.

Although a municipal council will be established for both Uruli Devachi and Fursungi villages, the disposal of municipal waste in the vicinity prompted a request to the government to cover the expenses of operating, maintaining, and repairing the water scheme. The MJP is executing a 33 million liter capacity water scheme for these villages, with the PMC funding the construction of water channels and storage tanks. So far, the PMC has allocated Rs 31 crores towards the project.

However, Maharashtra state government was urged to assign the financial responsibility of operating and maintaining the water scheme to the PMC. The municipal corporation’s feedback was sought, and they have firmly stated that they should not bear the financial burden.

Currently, the municipality supply water to these villages through 200 tanker rounds per day. However, once the water scheme is operational, the use of tankers will cease. Considering that both villages are affected by municipal waste depots, the municipality has been providing water via tankers even before their inclusion within municipal limits. Thus, the PMC emphasizes that no additional financial strain should be imposed upon them.
