Pune, 4th February 2022: The Mutha riverside road will be permanently removed under the river beautification project. As an alternative to this, the road included in the Municipal Development Plan will be developed. The road will start from Savarkar Memorial in Deccan to Garware College and will be brought to Mhatre Bridge.

However, due to the settlements and private properties in the area, the municipal administration will face a big challenge to develop this road by acquiring land.

Pune Municipal Corporation(PMC) has undertaken a river rejuvenation project for the beautification of the Mula-Mutha river. In the first two phases, Sangamwadi to Bundgarden project worth Rs 350 crore and Bundgarden to Mundhwa project worth Rs 600 crore will be developed. In both, the projects 30-meter wide road will be constructed along the river from Naidu Sewage Treatment Plant to Mundhwa.

Inconvenience to residents in these areas

The present riverside road between Deccan to Mhatre bridge is within the blue line. If that road is closed, lakhs of citizens from Kothrud, Warje, Sinhagad road, Dhayari, Narhe, Khadakwasla, Uttamnagar, Shivne and other areas will have to suffer.

Road proposed for thirty years

In the development plan of PMC 1987 and 2017, a 30-meter wide road from Swatantryaveer Savarkar Smarak in Deccan to Mhatre bridge has been shown as an alternative route for Karve road. It is a proposed road connecting Shivane to Kharadi. However, in the last 30 years, it has gone unnoticed. The administration has said that this major road will be developed under the river rejuvenation project.

Three bridges will be an obstacle

The road from Deccan to Mhatre bridge will be beautified and pitched on both sides. It will have plans like a jogging track, park, cycle track. An alternative route of 30 meters width from Deccan to Mhatre bridge will be constructed. But in the meantime, Yashwantrao Chavan bridge, S. M. Joshi bridge and Mhatre bridge can be an obstacle to developing this road.

PMC officials said some land acquisition would have to be done as the road would pass through Rajput slum behind Garware College and Central Mall.
