Pune: PMC’s Girish Bapat PET Scan Centre Begins Operations, Tests Available at Rs 10,000
Pune, 2nd May 2026: The Late MP Girish Bapat PET Scan Diagnostic Centre has become operational, with two patients successfully undergoing PET scans on Wednesday (April 29). Two more scans are scheduled for Saturday (May 2), marking the start of regular services at the facility.
The centre, set up by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) near Baburao Sanas Ground, aims to provide affordable diagnostic services, particularly for cancer detection and treatment planning. Civic officials said the PET scan charges have been kept significantly lower than those in private hospitals, making it one of the most economical options available. While private hospitals typically charge between ₹22,000 and ₹25,000, the PMC facility will offer the scan for around ₹10,000.
The centre was inaugurated on December 15, 2025, by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, ahead of the civic election code of conduct. However, operations were delayed due to pending technical work, machine testing, and regulatory approvals. Officials said most requirements have now been completed, and the remaining minor works, including the installation of a lift, will be finished soon.
Developed in partnership with Xvision, the centre is equipped to detect the spread of cancer, identify tumours, and assist doctors in determining treatment options such as chemotherapy, surgery, or radiotherapy.
The project has been implemented under a public-private partnership model, with 60% investment by the private company and 40% by the PMC. The civic body has provided the space, while the company will pay nominal rent and electricity charges.
Assistant Health Chief Dr Sanjeev Wavare said the facility will help make advanced cancer diagnostics more accessible to the general public.
