Pune: PMC’s Ramtekdi Waste Project Draws Flak Over Revival of Old Tender,
Pune, 4th September 2026: The Pune Municipal Corporation’s decision to approve a Rs 74-crore waste processing project at Ramtekdi has come under fire from the Congress, which has questioned why the civic body revived a tender cancelled nearly two years ago instead of inviting fresh bids.
The proposed 75-tonne-per-day facility at the Ramtekdi industrial estate will process old clothes, rags, furniture, mattresses, foam and other similar waste. Green Earth Solutions LLP has been selected to execute the project.
Congress leaders alleged that the PMC had earlier approved a tender worth around Rs 66.08 crore for a 15-year period, but then municipal commissioner Dr Rajendra Bhosale cancelled it following objections. They questioned the decision to revive the same proposal by simply reducing its duration to 10 years.
Under the revised proposal, the PMC will pay Rs 1,100 per tonne for waste processing, with a seven per cent annual escalation. Congress leaders claimed this would result in a financial liability of around Rs 74 crore for the civic body over 10 years.
“Why was a fresh tender not invited? Does the PMC have the financial capacity to take on such a liability?” asked Pune East Congress president Prashant Jagtap.
Congress leader Arvind Shinde also demanded that the PMC invite fresh bids and release details of the city’s total waste generation, existing processing capacity, the quantity of waste actually being processed and pending payments to waste-management contractors.
Standing committee chairman Srinath Bhimale said the committee had approved several proposals, including the Ramtekdi waste processing project, land for a cemetery and financial assistance for renovation of the Palakhi Procession.
The Congress also questioned the need for another waste processing facility in the Hadapsar-Ramtekdi area, arguing that the PMC’s existing waste processing capacity remains inadequate compared with the volume of waste generated in the city.
