Pimpri, 18th October 2023: In response to a strike by contract drivers of a private bus contractor that occurred in August, the Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) has taken proactive steps to ensure that future strikes do not disrupt bus services. Additionally, a significant focus has been placed on guaranteeing accident-free and breakdown-free service for passengers.

To achieve these objectives, it was decided to train drivers of the Transport Corporation to operate electric buses. As a result, 484 drivers from PMPML have been successfully trained for this purpose. This training initiative, which began on August 26, aims to create a workforce equipped to handle electric buses effectively.

Out of the 2089 buses in PMPL’s fleet, 991 are owned by PMPL, while the remaining 1098 buses are contracted. Among these, 640 buses from contractors are powered by Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), and 458 are electric. It’s noteworthy that in the month of August, a strike by e-bus drivers had impacted PMPL’s services due to their demands.

Sachindra Pratap Singh, Chairman and Managing Director of the Transport Corporation, recognized the importance of training and skill development in ensuring the continuity of bus services. The initiative not only covers the technical aspects of driving electric buses but also emphasizes the provision of courteous treatment to passengers, adherence to RTO rules, and conducting operations without accidents and breakdowns. From July 27 to October 15, a total of 978 drivers from the Transport Corporation have undergone comprehensive training to meet these high standards.

This strategic training approach demonstrates PMPML’s commitment to maintaining a reliable and efficient bus service for the residents of Pune. It not only enhances the skills of drivers but also prepares them to handle various types of buses in their fleet, thereby reducing the likelihood of disruptions in services during any potential strikes or emergencies.
