Pune, 22nd November 2025: In the aftermath of the recent accident near Navale Bridge on the Mumbai–Bengaluru Highway, the Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) has enforced a strict 30 kmph speed limit for all buses operating between Katraj and Chandni Chowk.

The move is part of an urgent road-safety action plan initiated after Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol instructed multiple departments to adopt immediate preventive measures.

High-Level Meeting Triggers Safety Overhaul
Acting on the Union Minister’s directives, PMPML Chairman and Managing Director Pankaj Deore convened a detailed review meeting on November 20. Depot managers, engineers, private bus contractors, inspection teams and senior officials participated in the session, which revisited existing safety protocols and identified critical areas requiring intervention.

Deore announced a series of measures aimed at improving driver alertness, passenger safety and inter-departmental coordination. These include:
* Upgrades and repairs to wireless communication systems
• Training and refresher workshops for drivers and conductors
• Fire-safety audits across private PMPML buses
• Strict disciplinary action for violations of safety rules

One significant decision was the removal of the heavily congested Navale Bridge bus stop, which officials said was contributing to traffic bottlenecks. The stop has been shifted to a safer location and is now supported by two trained staff members and clear, prominent signboards for passengers.

Drivers operating on the Katraj–Chandni Chowk stretch have been categorically instructed not to exceed the 30 kmph speed limit. Deore emphasized that strict action will be taken against any breach of the updated guidelines.

Integrated Response Across Departments
Officials said the Navale Bridge accident has prompted a coordinated administrative response, with multiple agencies now working together to tighten safety enforcement, improve monitoring and introduce additional preventive mechanisms where necessary.

Key Safety Measures Rolled Out by PMPML
* Old Navale Bridge bus stop removed; new stop established at a secure location
• Deployment of trained personnel and installation of clear signboards
• Mandatory 30 kmph speed limit for PMPML buses on the Katraj–Chandni Chowk corridor
• Fire-safety audits for private buses operating under PMPML
• Strengthened wireless communication systems for faster emergency response
• Scrapping of buses older than 12 years or those that have crossed eight lakh kilometres

The updated measures, officials said, are expected to significantly enhance road safety and reduce accident risks along one of Pune’s busiest highway stretches.
