Pune: PMRDA to Begin Work on Access Road for Rs 909-Crore Glass Skywalk Project in Lonavla

Pune, 7th June 2025: The Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) is gearing up to issue tenders for the construction of an internal access road leading to the proposed state’s longest glass skywalk in Lonavla, connecting the popular Lion and Tiger Points. This project is part of a ₹909-crore tourism development initiative aimed at boosting the region’s appeal as a global travel destination.
The iconic skywalk, inspired by the Grand Canyon Skywalk in Arizona, USA, will be 125 metres long and 6 metres wide, and will feature a 90-metre-long suspension bridge to offer sweeping views of the surrounding landscape. A senior official from PMRDA stated, “Starting the road construction is a critical step that will set the groundwork for the entire tourism infrastructure. We also plan to invite international players to ensure the project benefits from global design and safety standards.”
Eight project-related tenders are already under review, with more expected in the coming weeks, particularly for advanced engineering and tourism infrastructure components. The skywalk project is expected to be completed by June 2027, with ₹213.12 crore allocated for core infrastructure and the remaining ₹695.92 crore to be developed through public-private partnership (PPP) models.
Infrastructure Upgrades Underway
To support the large-scale development, PMRDA is also planning to enhance surrounding connectivity. This includes expanding the 11-km stretch between A1 Chikki and the proposed skywalk to 45 metres and developing an elevated expressway linking Mulshi and Lonavla.
“The entire plan revolves around Kurwande village in Lonavla, which is already a hotspot for visitors from Mumbai and Pune thanks to its stunning natural vistas,” said another official involved in the project.
Land Acquisition and Environmental Clearances Progressing
The authority has received preliminary clearance for acquiring 20.90 hectares of forest land, for which ₹5.2 crore has been paid to the forest department as Net Present Value (NPV). In addition, 3,378 square metres of private land are being acquired, with the process nearing completion. Alternate locations have been identified to compensate for the diverted forest areas, as required under environmental regulations.
Tourist Facilities and Amenities
Designed to provide a premium visitor experience, the skywalk complex will include:
A 5,000-square-metre rooftop café
A 1,000-seat amphitheatre
Adventure sports zones
Parking for 1,600 cars and 2,000 two-wheelers
Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, who is monitoring the project closely, has instructed the PMRDA to adhere to the proposed timeline and maintain international quality standards throughout the execution.
A senior official concluded, “This skywalk is not just a tourism showcase — it’s a landmark infrastructure effort that aligns with the state’s broader goal of building high-quality tourism hubs that combine access, amenities, and economic growth.”
