Pune, 30th December 2024: A postmortem report has confirmed that the elder of the two young sisters, whose bodies were found in a water drum in Rajgurunagar, was sexually assaulted before being murdered, Pune Rural Superintendent of Police Pankaj Deshmukh said on Sunday.

The accused, a 54-year-old cook, was arrested on Thursday from a lodge in Wadkinala. He has been remanded to police custody until January 1. According to Deshmukh, investigators believe the accused assaulted the nine-year-old girl after killing her younger sister. Both girls were reported missing on Wednesday while playing near their home.

The girls’ bodies were discovered on Wednesday night in a water drum located in the cook’s first-floor room in the same building where the family resided.

Police said the accused lured the girls into his room with sweets. “Once inside, he locked the elder sister in the bathroom,” an officer involved in the investigation said. The younger sister began screaming, prompting the accused to strike her on the head with a pipe and drown her in the water drum.

After killing the younger sibling, the accused attempted to sexually assault the elder sister, police said. “When she resisted and cried out, he drowned her in the drum as well before fleeing the scene,” an official added.

SP Deshmukh confirmed that forensic findings substantiate the claims of sexual assault. “The accused committed these acts to avoid being identified, as he was known to the family,” Deshmukh said.
