Pune, 30th December 2024: In a move aimed at easing travel for passengers at Pune airport, Minister of State for Civil Aviation and Member of Parliament Murlidhar Mohol has granted permission for five pre-paid cabs and five autorickshaws to operate from the new terminal building. The initiative seeks to provide on-the-spot transportation options for travelers.

Speaking about the decision, Mohol said, “I have directed the Pune airport director to allow five autorickshaws inside the terminal building premises, similar to the permission already granted to cabs. While there are a few technical challenges being addressed, the ultimate goal is to make the journey smoother for flyers.”

The decision has drawn mixed reactions, with AeroMall authorities expressing concerns over the influx of unauthorized autorickshaw drivers who allegedly create chaos, especially during late-night hours. “The unauthorized drivers are a significant issue. They enter the premises illegally, disrupt order, and even intimidate our staff. Despite repeated complaints to the police, the problem persists,” said YS Rajguru, vice president of AeroMall.

Meanwhile, members of the LV Antaral Autorickshaw Sanghatana welcomed the move. “A delegation from our association met MP Mohol, and he agreed to allow pre-paid autorickshaws at the airport,” said Prakash Rajguru, president of the association. We share concerns about unauthorized drivers, but managing them is not our responsibility. This issue needs to be addressed by AeroMall management and airport authorities. Due to these unauthorized drivers, we are losing legitimate business.”

Previously, passengers could only book rides at designated points outside the terminal, often resulting in delays and overcrowding. The new system ensures that five cabs and five autorickshaws are stationed at the new terminal at all times for direct pick-ups.

Despite the benefits for passengers, the challenge of regulating unauthorized autorickshaws remains unresolved. “While allowing pre-paid services inside the terminal is a positive step, managing unauthorized drivers in the surrounding areas is critical. We will raise this issue with airport authorities again,” Rajguru added.
