Pune Police Constable Accused of Cheating Woman of Rs 17 Lakh and 73 Tolas of Gold
Pune, 8th July 2025: A Pune Police constable has been accused of defrauding a woman of ₹17 lakh in cash and 73 tolas of gold by misusing his position and exploiting personal acquaintance, triggering questions about internal integrity within the force.
The accused, identified as Ashok Jagtap, allegedly used his status as a police employee to gain the trust of a 51-year-old woman and her husband. The complaint was lodged at the Chaturshingi Police Station, following which an investigation has been initiated.
According to the FIR, Jagtap and the complainant knew each other personally. Over time, he reportedly persuaded the couple to give him large sums of money and gold, claiming he was unable to take a bank loan due to his government service.
“Jagtap told them he had 5 kg of gold mortgaged at a shop, ₹1 crore due in the market, and that a land deal was in the final stages,” said an investigating officer. “He assured them he would repay the money and return the gold after receiving the proceeds from the land transaction.”
The total alleged cheating amounts to ₹17 lakh in cash and 73 tolas (approx. 730 grams) of gold.
“This is a serious matter. The accused used his position in the police force to deceive a citizen,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 4) Somay Munde. “We have taken cognizance of the complaint. A thorough investigation is underway and appropriate action will be taken against the employee.”
