Pune Police Constable Suspended Over Assaulting Stray Dog Feeder

Pune, 23rd October 2023: A shocking incident unfolded in the Chandrama Society area of DSK Vishwa where a female police officer was accused of assaulting a woman for feeding stray dogs. The issue has garnered nationwide attention, prompting former Minister Maneka Gandhi to intervene.
For years, Manisha Pawar has been feeding stray dogs in various parts of the city, including the Chandrama Society, in an effort to reduce accidents and fatalities caused by these animals scrounging for food. However, her work was recently disrupted by Mohini Paithankar/Kulkarni, a resident police constable in Chandrama Society.
Upon hearing of the assault, animal rights activist and former Minister Maneka Gandhi contacted the police commissioner of Pune, demanding an investigation into the incident.
Based on Manisha Pawar’s complaint, a case was registered against Paithankar/Kulkarni at Haveli Police Station (Pune rural police) under IPC sections 323, 506, and 427, which involve assault and animal cruelty. Pawar claimed that although the stray dogs have not harmed anyone, she was beaten and nearly strangled for feeding them.
The case has elicited a strong reaction on social media and has been covered extensively in newspapers. Following the public outcry, Rohidas Pawar, DCP (Headquarters) of Pune City Police, took suspension action against Mohini Paithankar/Kulkarni as she is posted here.
