Pune Police Deploy 10 Advanced Breath Analyzers to Curb Drunk Driving, 117 Persons Booked on Weekend
Pune, 18th August 2025: To curb the rising number of serious accidents caused by drunk driving and to take strict action against offenders, the Pune Police Traffic Branch has purchased ten advanced breath analyzer devices. These machines are connected via the internet to the Traffic Police Control Room as well as the Main Police Control Room. The new system will help make action against drunk drivers more effective and transparent.
“Pune City Traffic Branch has taken action against 117 drivers for driving under the influence of alcohol on Saturday and Sunday night. A total of 4390 challans were issued on Saturday, August 16, and 4496 on Sunday against those violating traffic rules”, said DCP (Traffic) Himmat Jadhav.
The city has witnessed an increase in serious road accidents, often due to overspeeding, violation of traffic rules, and driving under the influence of alcohol. To ensure strict action, the Traffic Police have procured ten state-of-the-art breath analyzers, and starting next week, action against drunk drivers will be initiated using these devices.
Supervision by Senior Officials
“The new breath analyzer machines are connected to the Pune Police Main Control Room and the Traffic Police Control Room through the internet. Senior officials will be monitoring this action. Since the devices are linked directly to the control room, details of how the action was carried out will be available instantly. This will help make enforcement more effective and transparent,” said Additional Police Commissioner Manoj Patil.
He further added, “Once it is confirmed that a motorist is driving under the influence of alcohol, a report will be sent directly to the control room. Following this, the concerned police officer will initiate penal action. If the motorist is found not guilty of drinking and driving, the report will be recorded accordingly. This system will increase the accountability of the officers on the ground. If they fail to act, they will have to provide an explanation.”
