Pune Police Deploy 125 Smart IP Speakers for Real-Time Traffic and Emergency Alerts

Shivajinagar, 2nd June 2025: In a bid to enhance communication with citizens and streamline emergency responses, the Pune City Police have installed 125 advanced Internet Protocol (IP) speakers at key roads and intersections across the city.
These high-tech speakers are connected to the city’s central command centre, where officials monitor traffic and public movement via CCTV surveillance. The speakers are being used to issue live announcements, warn commuters about congested or flooded roads, and respond swiftly to incidents such as road accidents, tree falls, or sudden diversions due to rallies, processions, or festivals.
“We’ve started with 125 IP speakers, but the plan is to expand this to 500 in a phased manner over the coming years,” said Assistant Commissioner of Police Vivek Pawar. “Currently, the system is operational at all major traffic junctions. We’ll gradually extend coverage to other parts of the city.”
The speaker network serves a dual purpose: guiding citizens and coordinating with traffic police personnel on the ground. ACP Pawar explained that real-time instructions can be given not just to the public, but also to officers on duty, which helps manage both traffic flow and law and order more efficiently.
“During large public events like Ganeshotsav or Ashadhi Wari, this system becomes crucial,” he added. “It helps us direct vehicles, prevent bottlenecks, and even assist emergency services in clearing routes for ambulances, fire brigades, or VIP movements.”
Officials believe the system is particularly useful during unpredictable weather or city-wide events. Integrated with the city’s traffic control room, the IP speakers allow officers to make immediate decisions and relay information directly to commuters and field personnel.
“This is not just about announcements,” Pawar emphasized. “It’s about building a smarter and safer Pune where technology supports both the police force and the citizens.”
