Pune Police Gears Up for Safe New Year’s Eve: Focus on Drunk Driving and Road Safety
Pune, 31st December 2024: Additional Commissioner of Police Manoj Patil, in a conversation with Punekar News Consulting Editor Tikam Shekhawat, shared the Pune Police’s comprehensive preparations for the upcoming New Year’s Eve celebrations, emphasizing road safety and public order.
Discussing the measures, Patil urged citizens to act responsibly by avoiding drinking and driving, refraining from rash driving, and adhering to traffic rules. “Our message to the people is clear: Don’t drink and drive. Drive responsibly and ensure safety for everyone,” he emphasized.
To enforce these rules, Pune Police will deploy extensive surveillance through CCTV cameras and increased patrolling. Police teams will also conduct breathalyzer tests at multiple checkpoints across the city to identify and penalize drunk drivers.
Highlighting the department’s recent efforts, Patil disclosed that over the past four months, strict action has been taken against traffic violations. More than 1,10,000 cases have been registered for wrong-side driving, and over 55,000 cases involve triple-seat riding. These actions aim to reduce traffic congestion and enhance road safety for all citizens.
Patil shared alarming statistics, revealing that Pune records an average of 1,200 road accidents annually, with nearly 300 resulting in fatalities. “These figures underscore the urgent need for everyone to follow traffic rules and drive responsibly,” he said.
He further noted that as part of an initiative by the Commissioner of Police, Pune is installing 2,800 CCTV cameras across the city to enhance surveillance. Additionally, the implementation of the Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS) will improve traffic flow and ensure safer roads through technology-driven solutions.
In a significant achievement, Pune Police have registered over 5,500 cases of drunk driving in 2024, surpassing the combined total of such cases over the past four years.
