Erandwane, 9th April 2025: Pune Police have imposed restrictions around Deenanath Mangekar Hospital after the death of Tanisha Bhise, a pregnant woman, triggered widespread protests and allegations of medical negligence. The family of the deceased claims she was denied admission due to a ₹10 lakh deposit demand, leading to delayed treatment and ultimately her death.
Tanisha Bhise, wife of Sushant Bhise—personal assistant to Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLC Amit Gorkhe—had gone to Deenanath Mangekar Hospital for delivery, but the hospital allegedly demanded a hefty deposit before treatment. Unable to pay, the family rushed her to another facility where she gave birth, but she later died.
Following the incident, several organizations staged demonstrations outside the hospital, demanding accountability. To prevent further unrest, Pune Police have banned public gatherings within 100 meters of the hospital from April 9 to April 19, 2025. Only hospital staff, security personnel, drivers, and patient relatives will be allowed in the restricted zone.
“No more than two people, except relatives, are permitted near the hospital premises. Use of loudspeakers, posters, or writings that could provoke controversy is also prohibited,” the order states.
The incident has prompted the Maharashtra state government to launch an inquiry, and a committee has been formed to investigate. In the wake of the controversy, Dr. Sushrut Ghaisas, who allegedly asked for the deposit, has resigned from his honorary position at the hospital.
A notice has been served to the hospital by the Pune Municipal Corporation’s (PMC) Health Department. “Hospitals must not ask for deposits in emergency cases. Treatment should always come first. Legal action will be taken if such behavior is repeated,” said Dr. Suryakant Deokar, Assistant Health Officer, PMC.
