Pune, 23rd May 2025: In a strong crackdown on corruption within the police force, Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar has suspended a Police Sub-Inspector (PSI) for allegedly accepting bribes to shield an illegal hookah bar. The action sends a stern message to officers enabling unlawful businesses.

PSI Sharad Nivrutti Navale, posted at Kalepadal Police Station, was suspended by Deputy Commissioner of Police Dr. Rajkumar Shinde after an inquiry revealed that he was allegedly receiving a monthly bribe of ₹30,000 from BBC Rooftop Kitchen and Bar in Mohammadwadi — identified as the largest hookah bar in Pune.

According to the investigation, the bar owner, Parth Anil Walhekar, began operating the hookah lounge in April 2025. During questioning, Walhekar reportedly admitted that Navale had initially demanded ₹30,000 as a “good luck” token and ₹30,000 for the first month’s protection. The cash payment was made on April 10.
An additional ₹30,000 was allegedly transferred online on May 12 through an intermediary, Hanumant Gaikwad Patil, reportedly at Navale’s request.

On May 18, a joint team from the Pune Crime Branch and Kalepadal Police raided the BBC Rooftop bar and discovered 57 youngsters smoking hookah at 16 tables — marking the city’s largest bust of an illegal hookah establishment.

Officials said Navale’s alleged involvement not only enabled illegal operations but also damaged the integrity of the police department. Based on preliminary findings that ₹90,000 in bribes had been accepted, immediate disciplinary action was taken.
