Pune, 22nd September 2021: An FIR has been registered against Bharatiya Janata Party’s Pravin Darekar, Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Council, for his remark that the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) is a party with a painted cheek.

Based on the complaint from NCP’s women state president Rupali Chakankar, Sinhgad Road police station has registered the case against Darekar for the offence under section 509 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Chakankar said, “For the last two years, the BJP has been working hard to break the unity and tradition of Maharashtra. He is very much focused on how to discredit Maharashtra consistently. The BJP has reached a very low level of politics. Pravin Darekar made a very obscene statement. Speaking in a public meeting, women will feel ashamed. Darekar was expected to apologize for this. But he said that he doesn’t give much importance to this. So I have complained. I believe that justice will be done within the framework of the law.”

Lavani queen Surekha Punekar joined the NCP on September 16. After this Darekar had remarked that the NCP is a party with a painted cheek.

What did Darekar say?

A gathering of the Ramoshi community was organized in Shirur taluka of Pune district on the occasion of the birth anniversary of the freedom fighter Umaji Naik. Speaking on the occasion, Darekar criticized Surekha Punekar without mentioning her name.

He said, “Nationalist Congress Party is a party with a painted cheek. This party does not have time to look at the poor. It is the party of the rich, bankers and industrialists.”
