Pune, 6th June 2023: The Pune police are intensifying their efforts to monitor the movements of criminals with the installation of 2,880 new CCTV cameras across the city. The decision comes after a thorough review of crimes committed in the past decade, providing detailed insights into theft, robbery, fights and accidents.

Director General of Police Rajnish Sheth shared this information during his visit to the Police Commissionerate, where he interacted with reporters in the presence of Police Commissioner Retesh Kumaarr and Joint Commissioner of Police Sandeep Karnik.

Currently, Pune has approximately 1,400 CCTV cameras primarily installed in traffic areas for crime investigation purposes. However, the police have identified specific locations where crimes have been consistently occurring and have decided to enhance surveillance in those areas. The planned installation of 2,880 new CCTV cameras will provide comprehensive coverage. The police will also seek the cooperation of shopkeepers in installing CCTV cameras outside their shops to enhance monitoring efforts. The footage from these cameras will be connected to the police’s CCTV control room through a fiber optic connection.

In the initial phase, around 10,000 establishments are expected to have CCTV cameras installed. The police will work closely with shopkeepers to facilitate the installation process. By expanding the surveillance network, law enforcement aims to enhance public safety and ensure swift response to criminal activities. The comprehensive monitoring system will significantly contribute to crime prevention and investigation.

Furthermore, Maharashtra police have identified the increasing number of cybercrimes as a priority concern. To address this issue, modern software has been provided to cyber police stations in every district. This technological upgrade will enable faster and more efficient investigations into reported cybercrime incidents. Director General Rajnish Seth emphasized the need to take action against extortionists in industrial companies to curb the rising trend of industrial crime.
