Pune, 6th June 2026: In a bid to tackle growing traffic congestion and improve traffic discipline, Pune Police plan to deploy artificial intelligence (AI)-based surveillance cameras at around 500 locations across the city. The project will soon be finalised, Additional Commissioner of Police Manoj Patil said on Saturday.

Patil was speaking at a Pune Traffic Conference organised on the initiative of Deepti Chaudhary, president of the west division of Pune City Congress. Former corporators Gopal Tiwari and Avinash Bagve, along with party office-bearers and workers, were present at the event.

Highlighting efforts to ease traffic congestion, Patil said Pune Police are adopting a planned approach and will increasingly rely on technology rather than manpower alone to manage traffic more effectively. The AI-powered cameras will enable direct action against motorists violating traffic rules, he said.

Addressing another key concern, Chaudhary pointed out that while a large number of citizens have started using the Metro after the launch of services, commuters travelling to stations in private vehicles continue to face parking shortages. She urged the Metro administration and the Pune Municipal Corporation to provide adequate parking facilities near Metro stations.

Patil also said the government is seriously considering measures against motorists who fail to pay e-challan penalties and that a decision to strengthen fine recovery mechanisms is expected soon.
