Pune Police to Launch ‘Cop-24’ Beat Marshal System to Tackle Rising Street Crimes

Pune, 28th January 2025: In response to the increasing incidents of street crimes in the city, Pune Police is set to launch the ‘Cop-24’ beat marshal system aimed at enhancing safety and reducing response times. The initiative comes amidst a surge in chain snatching, harassment of women, and attacks by criminal gangs using koytas to vandalize vehicles and intimidate citizens.
Currently, police patrols are conducted to prevent untoward incidents, and citizens can report emergencies by dialing 112. However, complaints about delayed police responses have been common. To address this issue, Pune City Commissioner of Police Amitesh Kumar has decided to strengthen the beat marshal system by introducing ‘Cop-24,’ which will become operational on 15th February.
Key Features of ‘Cop-24’
– Enhanced Response Time: The average response time for beat marshals will be reduced from seven minutes to five minutes.
– Strategic Deployment: Areas prone to frequent crimes have been identified, and patrol locations have been mapped accordingly.
– Technology Integration: A special system with QR codes will be implemented for monitoring patrol teams.
Structure of ‘Cop-24’
– Patrol teams across all 39 police station jurisdictions.
– Coordination with the police control room.
– A total of 726 beat marshals equipped with 125 two-wheelers and vans.
Objectives of ‘Cop-24’
– Maintaining law and order.
– Preventing criminal activities.
– Ensuring swift arrival at crime scenes.
– Engaging with local citizens to resolve issues.
The beat marshals will operate under the Crime Branch and receive training on handling critical situations and coordinating with citizens. Equipped with modern weapons and body cameras, they will document their actions during operations for accountability.
According to Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime) Shailesh Balkawade, this initiative aims to curb criminal activities and restore public confidence in law enforcement.
